Do it yourselfers rejoice, asphalt roof shingles provide the perfect roofing diy solution for your home roofing project. In this guide i'll show you how to install asphalt shingles for your outdoor structure - whether a new outdoor living area / outdoor room, gazebo, garden shed or cubby house.

This gazebo was built in three days by a handy homeowner with a fairly basic set of tools.

The gazebo basic structure

I will start after the basic structure has been built. The first job is to install the roofing plywood.

The plywood is 2400 x 1200 A-bond Structural grade 12mm tongue and groove plywood. This high grade ply will give the gazebo a long life.

Nail the plywood onto the rafters every 150mm and cut a straight line up the rafter and up the centre line on the hip.

Staple down the asphalt saturated felt paper

Roll out the #15 felt paper over the entire structure following the manufacturers guidelines.

Installing the three tab fibreglass asphalt roof shingles

Here we install the three tab fibreglass asphalt roof shingles. Starting with the starter course we then apply a horizontal chalk line and two vertical chalk lines as a guide for our shingles. Carefully nail down the asphalt shingles with wide head roofing clout nails.

We used 10mm head galvanised roofing nails. Our nails were 20mm long shank which didn't penetrate through the plywood for a nice finish.

Using IKO asphalt shingles for the diy gazebo

Using your chalk lines as a guide install the asphalt shingles in courses up the roof.

It is a good idea to snap a horizontal chalk line every 4-5 vertical courses.

Now we snap a chalk line down the centre hip line and cut straight down the hip. We then repeat the process on all sides of the roof.

We cut the hip capping out of the three tab shingle and use these pieces for the hips and the ridge "if there is one" Mark a chalk line half a tab out from the hip centre line and use this as a guide for your hip capping pieces.

Here we have the finished product. We connected lighting to the gazebo so we could use it on those summer nights. A great diy roofing project that can take as little as three full days.
